Saint-Tropez

The classic Riviera visit, close enough for an easy outing

Saint-Tropez is the most famous town near the villa, and it is worth seeing at least once during your stay. The mistake is trying to “do everything” in one visit. Saint-Tropez is better enjoyed as a slow walk through a few key places: the old port, the old town, Place des Lices, the Citadel, and perhaps one museum or beach depending on the mood of the day.

Start with the Vieux Port, the old harbour. This is the postcard view of Saint-Tropez: boats, colourful façades, cafés, and the movement of the waterfront. It is a good place to begin the visit, especially early in the morning before the town becomes too busy, or at golden hour when the light is softer. The official tourism office lists the old port and old town as the first essential Saint-Tropez experience.

From the port, walk into La Ponche, the old fishing quarter. This is one of the most atmospheric parts of Saint-Tropez, with narrow streets, old houses, small passages, and a more intimate feeling than the harbour. It is the area that reminds you Saint-Tropez was once a fishing village before it became a Riviera icon.

Continue toward Place des Lices, one of the central meeting points of the town. Under the plane trees, you will often see people playing pétanque, and the square is also known for its market atmosphere. It is a useful stop for coffee, a drink, or simply watching the rhythm of the town.

For views and history, go up to the Citadel of Saint-Tropez. It sits above the town and includes the maritime history museum. The view from the Citadel is one of the strongest reasons to make the climb, with panoramas over the bay, coastline, and surrounding area.

If you want a cultural stop, choose between the Musée de l’Annonciade and the Gendarmerie and Cinema Museum. The Annonciade is the stronger choice for art, with collections linked to Pointillist, Fauvist, and Nabis painters. The Gendarmerie and Cinema Museum is lighter and more playful, especially for guests interested in the film history of Saint-Tropez.
